Does my utility compete against third party suppliers?

No. Your utility supports energy competition and encourages customers to choose a supplier that is right for them. Even after you choose a non-utility supplier, your utility will still be there to read your meter, handle service calls, and provide emergency assistance.

What can I do if I think my meter reading is incorrect?

You have a right to request a regulated gas, electric or water utility your meter if you believe it does not accurately reflect your usage. You have the right to have your meter tested, free of charge, once a year by your utility. For a $5 fee the meter test will be conducted under the supervision of a BPU staff member.

When can a utility shut-off my service?

There are certain conditions under which the utility can shut-off service.  After giving proper notice, the utility company may disconnect your service if you are in violation of any of the utility's tariffs, or for reasons such as:

  • Failure to pay a delinquent bill
  • Failure to meet or maintain your deposit.
  • Failure to provide the utility company reasonable access to its equipment and property.
  • The utility has evidence of meter tampering or fraud.
